CAPTAIN’S LOG: ALL GOOD THINGS…

filed in episode All Good Things...

“It is time to put an end to your trek through the stars.” -Q

In the series finale of The Next Generation, and our last episode for the term, Captain Picard finds himself moving through time against his will. He is also suffering hallucinations, and after a time-jump he discovers that he is predisposed to a degenerative neurological condition known as Irumodic Syndrome.

Is Picard going crazy, or is the world really coming apart around him? An anomaly is discovered in two of the three time periods he visits, but the crew is unable to make a meaningful connection.

Whereas the Voyager finale dealt with an abuse of power, this finale looks at the complete loss of power. Not only has Picard lost control of when he exists, but the destruction of all humanity seems to be predetermined – and it’s all Picard’s fault. How do we deal with the loss of pose or authority? Are we ever completely powerless? What does this episode tell us about Captain Picard’s leadership style?

A Battle of Technologies

filed in episode Balance of Terror

In the episode ‘Balance of Terror’ from “Star Trek: The Original Series,” Captain Kirk and the Enterprise crew are in a battle with the Romulans.  Both the Enterprise and the Romulan Bird of Prey (their ship) are equipped the lastest and greatest technology of the time.  The Bird of Prey has a cloaking device and powerful weapons, but the Enterprise is far more quick, maneuverable and agile with powerful weapons as well.  Since both ships are (somewhat) evenly matched in terms of … Read the rest

Who run this motha?

filed in episode All Good Things...

As i watched “All Good Things End”, I can’t help to think, “Why is he still running the ship”? I know, it’s Picard and he’s “awesome” (I put that in quotes because I am forever team Captain Kurk) but what kind of leader knows he has a brain issue and feels that it is his duty to run the ship. As a leader, I am dissapointed that he didn’t immediatly step down. How dare he?. … Read the rest

Time Travel

filed in episode All Good Things...

In the final episode All Good Things… of Star Trek Next Generation, the improvement and progression of technology can be seen in three different time periods when Captain Picard experiences time travel. While Captain Picard tries to figure out how to stop humanity from dying, the time lapse he experiences depicts how both design and engineering of the Starfleet vessel has changed.

For example, when Captain Picard tries to investigate the spatial anomaly in the … Read the rest

Endgame: The Predictor of New Technology?

filed in episode Endgame

In the Star Trek episode Endgame the science and technology portrayed in this episode led to thinking about how it is used in our society today. Many of the technologies portrayed in Endgame are “battle” technologies such as the ones used for protection by the crew of the Starship. Armour and weapons such as torpedoes are some classic examples. Which actually reminded me of a classic 80s video game. In other episodes other technologies such Read the rest

A Terrible Thing to Waste

filed in episode

In watching this week’s Trek episode—the series finale of Next Gen—we saw Picard spiral into a state of utter helplessness. This was probably our first experience—and Picard’s—seeing the fan favorite unable to get his crew out of trouble within the hour confines of the show. Of course, time travel is always tricky, and in this last installment of the series, Picard has no idea when he’ll be thrown into a different stage of his life, Read the rest

Pocket Aces

filed in episode All Good Things...

For the series finale of The Next Generation, writers Brannon Braga & Ronald D. Moore decided to extract as much screenplay juice as they could from the complex and riveting character of Jean-Luc Picard. Not satisfied with tormenting the cerebral capacity of his crew (and TNG’s audience!) on one plane of time, Jean-Luc Picard travels across multiple planes to prevent himself from bringing an end to humanity. For a character so enthralling, only an appropriately … Read the rest

Take Command

filed in episode Endgame EPISODE

This week, we watched as Captain Janeway attempted to get her crew home ahead of schedule as she traveled back in time to help Voyager get home more efficiently than she had accomplished in her time.  To do this, older Janeway lied, swindled, and persuaded to get her way.  The crew’s well-being was put above all else, including her own life.

This episode explored the idea of self sacrifice for the greater good of your … Read the rest
