CAPTAIN’S LOG: ALL GOOD THINGS…

filed in episode All Good Things... Captain's Log

“It is time to put an end to your trek through the stars.” -Q

In the series finale of The Next Generation, and our last episode for the term, Captain Picard finds himself moving through time against his will. He is also suffering hallucinations, and after a time-jump he discovers that he is predisposed to a degenerative neurological condition known as Irumodic Syndrome.

Is Picard going crazy, or is the world really coming apart around him? An anomaly is discovered in two of the three time periods he visits, but the crew is unable to make a meaningful connection.

Whereas the Voyager finale dealt with an abuse of power, this finale looks at the complete loss of power. Not only has Picard lost control of when he exists, but the destruction of all humanity seems to be predetermined – and it’s all Picard’s fault. How do we deal with the loss of pose or authority? Are we ever completely powerless? What does this episode tell us about Captain Picard’s leadership style?

As the captain, being the one to go through an illness and lost of control presents another opportunity for Picard to prove he is the greatest captain Starfleet has ever had. He had numerous encounters with the Borg, he made it through time travels and now this. The Enterprise crew has a hard time trusting his word but after a while, they realize he is still Picard and their great leader whose brought them over many humps. At the end of the episode Picard sits down to play cards with his crew after he successfully ends all issues, he speaks on how he should’ve done that a long time ago and one of his crew members reply, the invite was always on the table. They are all very close and have a strong bond for many reasons and it was extremely vital in this episode because without the trust of your crew, a leader is nothing.
